Should opening books be allowed?

Come on Bill spit it out and tell me which warning this was?????

Yes I was informed that to use that database was cheating and if MY memory serves me correctly once I was told of this I apologised and immediately stopped using it ...

How does that = a warning?????

You say what you want Donna and read as many chess books and use every database you want to, I dont care because I will never play you or let you play in one of my teams I would not want any of my members using help to win a game of chess that should be fun and players trusting each other to play fairly, that is my last  comment on the subject.

OMG so you think that every single player in Team England do not use a database?????????????????

Grow up Bill

Once again, I'm amazed at the complete and total lack of understanding displayed by some people in this thread. I'll repeat myself, since some of you obviously didn't read or understand my comment earlier in the thread:

Real time chess and correspondence chess are two different games. The entire point to correspondence is to have time to find the best moves, including using books and databases to research the position.

If you don't want to play that game, then stick to real time chess, and stay out of "turn based" (correspondence). Don't go around calling people cheaters and whining about us playing by the rules, just because you don't like and/or understand those rules.

What database weren't you allowed to use here??? Obviously, chess engines aren't allowed, but all books and databases should be appropriate.

Really? I know that tablebases are forbidden, but what about endgame books or collections of rook endings stored in a database?

That's an interesting question. My assumtion ( I really don't know based on what) was that only opening databases were allowed.

Good lord, Ziryab, when do YOU make a move?

Ziryab, I forgot to put the "laughing" emoticon after my comment. It was said in jestSmile I don't really care what database is used.

I'm a historian. I abhor originality. The first eight moves of this game were all according to theory.

Ahhh yes. The "silly opening". First mentioned in Monty Python's opening book from 1974. You use more tools than any CC player ever dreamed of.

I like to call it the Wolverine, sorta like a Fried Fox on steroids from the darker side.

Are you serious? There's such a thing as the silly opening? I've never, ever seen the King go in a circle and end up on the queen's square before. Laughing Laughing Laughing

tryst

Of course you won't see it, Musikamole. The "silly opening" has been banned in 199 countries. It requires your opponent to take illegal drugs.

Ziryab,

If I play through one more "silly opening" I'm going to have to call the police on you.

Sometimes, my opponent interferes with my plans:

Musikamole

Soon I will purchase ChessBase Light for my database. How will this help my cc games?

I know what opening books can do, i.e., 1.e4 e6. What is the next best move? Oh, it's the French Defense and the book tells me to play 2. d4.

Moving ahead, when I find myself past book lines for the French, could a huge database perform a search that would show me several good moves that were made after the opening line I played?

How many moves deep into the middlegame could a huge database take a player?
