"I'm not good at playing white. I'm better at playing black." or, "I'm not good at playing black. I'm better at playing white." Unless you're very specifically studying sequences of play, that doesn't make much sense and it's ridiculous! Heard that said today!

Tell him next time "You're always going to have the opportunity to play as both colors. Why not pick an opening with each color and build your reportoire."

Also, if there is an opening that drives you friggen nuts, then gets some information on it and look for "anti ruy lopez" moves or "ruy lopez traps" and the like. That way if someone says "I HATE Black. Because I love to play the Ruy Lopez!!" Then you say "O.K...but you might beat me because I'm not very good..."

But on the flip side of the coin. How many non-chessers know what the Ruy Lopez is. lolz

Yeah but that's a such a reasonable response. In my head, I need a good witty and cutting answer to such a comment. hahah. And also, I'm not familiar with any openings. I know, shaaaaaame.

Ruy Lopez is a high-end Mexican restaurant, right?

winerkleiner

No, he's a Mexican comedian right?

Trash talk is always your friend: Well, that's too bad, because I'm good at playing both and can beat you blindfolded.

Proceed to scare him off by reciting some nonsensical game you just came up with.

I may have an odd sense of humor, but that is not remotely funny.

Gentlemen (and lady!) Though nothing to do with chess, I just received my e-ticket, confirmed when I get an email regarding account activity showing my account has been charged, I'm going back to the Philippines! But it's going to be a long wait, as the flight leaves Tokyo after 2 days there to Manila February 1st of 2015. Sounds interesting, doesn't it? Especially after the flight 370 disappearance thing, as the possibility the same can (but very unlikely) happen to me, going that I'm headed to southeast asia, on a Boeing 777 to boot.

Traveling is awesome. It's cool that you're traveling. You become a better individual and more worldly too, of course! ^-^

Hehe :)

So, does that mean I can't put someone in a carbonite slab and post it on here?

Oh, either dragon or December mentioned the Magnus app that came out. Well, I gave it a shot and I'm trying to beat him at "age 9". Anyone else try this app?

akafett

You can only challenge him up to age 23. The app is better than I thought it would be. My only disappointment is that the coaching videos seem to be for the beginner, as in "I have never played chess before" beginner.

And if I were to imortalize you in carbonite, I would have a problem: I would not know which of your vast array of manga faces to use.

That dragon is kind of cute.

Indeed! But don't be too fooled. Hyper beam is one of the strongest moves, especially among 1st generation Pokémon. Also, look at its first evolution. Most of the time, the first evolution is the cutest then gets stronger from there.

(Watch out: We've got a Pokémon and chess nerd! Double nerdom!)

You should play mtg instead :)

@ December: For a couple of years, I drew some manga for comics being translated into English. It was a neat gig.

I had the app on my phone for a little then deleted it cause I didn't open it much. Lol. But I totally support him for making it!! It's an awesome idea and which other chess player has made their own app? Umm, I only know of Carlsen! He's awesome.

Magic The Gathering and other card games take money to actually get better and build your deck. So if you like spending money to improve your deck then I guess it's a cool hobby. But with chess, you just need to devote time to study and to play the game, etc. It's not about spending money to directly improve.

(Even with that said, I collect 1st generation Pokémon holo cards but I don't play the game. I'm not trying to be a great card collector or anything. I just love first generation Pokémon!)

Magic and Pokémon both appear to have originated in the 90's, back when I was a younger kid. I might argue Pokémon is more of a classic because of its populatity etc. but you can disagree if you'd like. haha. The point is, both seem to be classics, based off of my one second of Internet research.
