"I'm not good at playing white. I'm better at playing black." or, "I'm not good at playing black. I'm better at playing white." Unless you're very specifically studying sequences of play, that doesn't make much sense and it's ridiculous! Heard that said today!
Tell him next time "You're always going to have the opportunity to play as both colors. Why not pick an opening with each color and build your reportoire."
Also, if there is an opening that drives you friggen nuts, then gets some information on it and look for "anti ruy lopez" moves or "ruy lopez traps" and the like. That way if someone says "I HATE Black. Because I love to play the Ruy Lopez!!" Then you say "O.K...but you might beat me because I'm not very good..."
But on the flip side of the coin. How many non-chessers know what the Ruy Lopez is. lolz
Yeah but that's a such a reasonable response. In my head, I need a good witty and cutting answer to such a comment. hahah. And also, I'm not familiar with any openings. I know, shaaaaaame.
No, it get wrinklier with age. a wrinkly dragon is dangerous.
Yes tell me about it.
