The Fault In Our Stars is a great movie. Just throwing that out there.  Cried so many times but it was still uplifting.

It was amazing, wasn't it. Did you read the book first?

NO I DIDN'T... and I will never forgive myself for watching the movie adaptation before reading the book! (Like I did with Hunger Games, etc. Not that I'm even remotely comparing TFIOS to Hunger Games. Two totally different stories.)

I'd still say it's definitely worth a read even though you've already seen the movie. There were some parts seemed like they only made sense because I've read it. I first read it about six months ago, and then re-read it two weeks ago so it was fresh in my mind when I went to see it. I'd read it and then see the movie again if I were you. Also it was great to see it with someone who has also read the book, so I didn't have to stop watching and constantly explain things.

You're a smart cookie.

She had the same idea too… didn't want to see it with her friends who wouldn't understand, and couldn't think who to see it with… then along comes me and asks her if she'd like to see it with me.

Had a great night.

Literary minded people are my kinda people! PS I heard from a little bird that guys don't cry. Well, did you cry watching the movie? Or did she cry?

I took tissues, fully expecting that both of us would cry. I didn't, but she shed a little tear, and I was going to offer her a tissue and a shoulder to cry on, but I think she was a bit embarrassed for me to see her crying, and she snuck her own tissues out before I even noticed that she was.

Well you had the good intentions to cry and I think girls, speaking as one, really love a shoulder to try on. hehe.

I do cry (sometimes) and I can get really emotional about stories like that, having been through something similar myself when I was younger. I think having just read the book again and knowing what happens and when, together with being super happy to be enjoying the evening with a really really nice girl who I like a lot, meant that there was no way I was going to cry that night.

That looks like fun!

Someone at our school claimed he knew how to play chess. I asked him "What is castling?" and he said "Something you do with your king and rook

@ December: You are quite welcome. Before replying to someone's post, I endeavor to understand the idea conveyed by the individual.

Now, regarding the "wood-pusher" reference to myself. The truth is, I am not certain at what level I am. I know a wood-pusher refers to one who only knows how the pieces move (I know more than that). Patzers, so I am told, have little to no knowledge of tactics and opening strategy and are easily defeated (I'm starting to think patzer is anything below a master).

Well, I am easily defeated by a USCF 1800 player, not so against a 1400 (USCF) player, and against a USCF ~1000 player I have no problem winning (all based on people I have played OTB with). So, I'm not sure if I am considered a beginner or intermediate player. What do you think?

@chessplayer That comment thread is only slightly embarrassing for me. LOL.

So, if you could find someone on chess.com with a rating of 1, you would deserve a cookie. A really big cookie. Very big. Or, to be a little more realistic, someone with a rating under... I don't know... 200. I've not seen that yet.

@December TwentyNine Those chess sets are so pretty! I've actually never seen the purple set before online or in person, so that's awesome. I dig!!! Laughing

That's the first time I can recall someone referred to any of the sets as "pretty." I'll just take it as a compliment.

Now Ed, on the contrary, who is one of our strong coffeehouse players that usually shows up to play every week, says that he'd rather not play on some of the sets I have, he's one of those old fashioned retired engineer guys.

If he got goin' a great game of chess I'm sure he'd forget the color of the chess set in a jiffy Laughing

I believe it should be "dark square bishop" since it resides on a dark square and the bishop itself is not dark-squared. Of coarse if you do have a set of chessmen decorated with square patterns on them, you could have a light square dark-squared bishop.

I almost always type and say DSB and LSB, or BP (bishop pair).

Hilarious post akafett, love some unintentional humour

@ IncredyBill: I am known for my subtle humor. It was quite intentional. Nice pun, btw (your screen name).

Mark, whos humor is comparible to akafett's, was the first person to use my pink and white set. Didn't even phase him, just began setting up the board and showing me all these different diagrams that he memorizes from books and magazines; he doesn't care about the colors either. I bet if I had a my little pony friendship is magic chess set, he still wouldn't care.

Yeah, thought so! I think a respectable chess player would play on any chess set without hesitation. Someone who comments beyond the fact that, sure, it's funny the pieces are pink or purple or whatever, I think needs to remember that it's still a chess set?! (Arguing with myself here lol welcome to my mind)

Although I have played with a variety of styles of chess sets, they can have "too much cologne." That is to say, they can be overly ornate to the point to where it is difficult to tell what is what by a simple glance.

@ December: There are very ornate chess sets that I think attractive. But when it comes to playing, I prefer the Staunton based designs.

The board is GORGEOUS... the pieces... a bit on the creepy side to my eyes
