Stuff Non-Chess Players Say

There is one inherent problem with chess. Numerically, there are a limited number of combinations of moves---a really LARGE number---but still limited. As a result, a mindless automaton, with absolutely no imagination whatsoever, can master it and beat the smartest human. Simply because you can task every bit in the automaton to focus on as many combinations of moves as possible, and do nothing else. No human can or would want to devote every one of their brain cells to calculating every possible permutation and outcomes in a chess match. It would be a waste of time, and of course lead to death.

Better to burn those brain cells out the old fashion way: pleasure.

Speaking of chess and pleasure, I would love to read an academic essay on the relationship between the human brain's reward system and chess. If there have been any serious studies on it, that is. (Though I don't think I'd like to read about chess resulting in death...!)

We ought to have more respect for babies here...after all, babys discovered the Pythagorean theorem!

Oh wait...that was the Babylonians...

akafett

I never did like checkers.

winerkleiner

How about Connect Four?

camberfoil

If chess is for babies, and checkers is for fetuses, then what is Connect Four for? Embryos?

condude2

If chess is for babies, checkers is for fetuses, and connect four is for embryos, who is tic-tac-toe for?

OMG. A wild charizard appeared!

Connect four is fun! But according to AJS I'm an embryo for liking connect four. Interesting. Maybe he thinks it's some form of checkers.

No, if someone plays Connect Four and not chess, they are an embryo. Since you play chess, you are a "baby" by these standards, as we all are apparantly.

There are only 4,531,985,219,092 different positions in connect four. (By the way, it has already been solved too. The 1st player will always win).

Checkers has about 5*10^20 positions.

Chess is estimated to have 10^43 positions, which is 50,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times more than checkers.

"Chess is for babies" is definitely something a non-chesser will say

akafett

What if you've only beaten wood-pushers?

Just wondering.

Maybe Connect Emgryos would make a better title!

True I saw an episode of Game on America and this was mentioned!

Actually, I must make a disclaimer. In my previous post (3312), I was not saying that I only beat wood pushers; that would be an insult to all of those I have defeated as well as untrue. So far, I have not played any wood pushers on this site.

It's hard to say, chess.com has a reputation for cheaters. And as a matter of fact, Dragon and myself are friends with one of them...and no it's not winer or yourself.

If we're thinking about the same person, then I deleted that person a way-long time ago. And probably resigned from the game I was playing with this cheater. (What's the point in finishing a game with a cheater who will use a chess engine to kick my butt? People who play a ridiculous number of online chess games can often be a good indication that they're not playing fairly. I always check that if I get a random challenge.)

BTW, I like how you switch between my real name and Dragon. It's really fun for me to see. Lol. Tongue Out

Chess is for babies, Go is for adults. 10^700 possible games at least...compared to chesss 10^120, ... both way more than the measly 10^80 predicted electrons in the known Universe!

Incorrect: Go on a 19x19 board has 10^360 possible games. Chess has 10^123 possible games.

Amusingly, stratego takes the cake for variations with a whopping 10^535 different possible games!
