Aronian already better against Topalov.

Avatar of varelse1

Topolov refuses to trade queens! (Move 20) Aronian may actually be better now.

Avatar of fabelhaft

Chess24's depth 22 Stockfish just gave Aronian as +0.35 and Caruana as +1.47.

Carlsen on his first long think at move 18

Carlsen going for something fancy after his half hour think.

Yes.

Engines are not impressed with his choice 18...Nh5.

Let's see if Magnus can prove the machines wrong.

Looks like Carlsen hopes to scare Naka from playing the apparently best Nxd4 and letting a black knight in at f4, but as long as Naka doesn't start seeing ghosts he should be fine here.

Avatar of fabelhaft

Naka played the best line according to engines, Carlsen gets some half open lines against the white king and f4 for the knight for a while, but it shouldn't amount to much.

Naka, who Carlsen once described as "inept"

Could this be his day???

MVL being miniaturised by Caruana.

Wow, MVL going down hard.  I was hoping this game would be exciting, but not in this way Laughing

Yes. Engines not likeing MLV's position at all now.

Avatar of fabelhaft

Naka is probably the one that is more worried about losing this position than Carlsen.

Since losing to Carlsen has become a pattern with him, I would have to agree.

Engines cannot measure psychology.

Humans like white too I'd think.  Up a whole piece and with more active pieces.

Houdini still likes Topolovs position, but I don't think anybody else does.

Including Topolov.

Remarkable how horribly Topalov fell apart.

Avatar of shell_knight

I actually haven't seen Topalov play a good game in a long time...

I guess he did well at the Olympiad, but I didn't follow those games Laughing

I think Naka let what little he had slip with 21.f6
