Caruana doing great! I hope he will aim higher than just becoming Carlsen's main rival....

Carlsen looked gobsmacked after today's game. I think all the politics of the match with Anand is getting to him. But he's tough, he could bounce back easily enough.

I think Caruana may have the best record against Carlsen amongst the world super GMs. Naka could use some tips from him. And poor Aronian. But MVL is a tough customer on any day.

Avatar of Spiritbro77

Yes, MVL is an up and comer as well. The Chess landscape seems to be in good hands for the next couple decades

naka throws away a winning position... this is normal against carlsen but against topalov?

these two have very similar styles too...

Six of nine games have been decisive, not what you expect in the highest rated tournament ever.

The third round really was as far from what you would expect from a Category 23 tournament as possible. Carlsen sacrifices a piece quite unsoundly and has a lost position early, Topalov blunders into a lost position more than once, but Nakamura blunders back and even loses in the end, while Aronian makes mistake after mistake and is lost very early. Maybe round four will be a bit more dry.

Predicting three draws in round four.

So much for draw death.

So how many hundred years is it since one could say that an Italian was one of the best chess players?

Avatar of varelse1

Idk

When did Greco die?

Avatar of fabelhaft

"When did Greco die?"

380 years ago, so that should be the answer, I don't think there has been any great Italian chess player since, at least not anywhere close to Caruana's world ranking.

Avatar of fabelhaft

Some may say Greco was slightly more Italian than Caruana, who grew up in USA, his parents being US citizens, and who has never lived in Italy, but he does play for Italy after all.

Avatar of varelse1

True.

But he does live in Switerland, a "stone's throw" from Italy.

Btw, did you know Caruana grew up ion the same block as Bobby Fischer?

(Must be something in the water over there in Brooklyn)

Avatar of fabelhaft

Never heard that, but the list of US top players isn't looking bad, if one includes players that either grew up in or played for USA, for example Morphy, Steinitz, Pillsbury, Marshall, Fine, Reshevsky, Fischer, Kamsky, Nakamura, Caruana (who after all started out playing for USA and has dual citizenship).

Fabiano is clearly an Italian name. :)

Avatar of fabelhaft

I also read somewhere that he does speak Italian, even if he said in some interview that he didn't know the country all that well.

Emmanuel Lasker lived in New York during his later years as well. Not sure if it was during his reign as Champion, or not, however. Guessing no.

Am pretty sure both his parents were native born Italians.

Avatar of varelse1

Wow.

Just saw Caruana's rating is up to 2815!

He keeps this up, he is going to beat Aronians record.
