Obviously, the shorter the game and the longer the players played book moves, the greater the likelihood of a duplicated game.  I've had teens on the high school team I coached play the Bishop's Opening or Vienna Game with an early f4, then O-O-O, and then launch a pawn storm against their opponent's king.  They practiced it so often during club meetings that I would see similar positions on some of my players boards as I walked around the room as TD at a tournament.

Well, the intriguing aspect with the games Chernev selected is that the openings aren't even related, yet the final position, while quite similar though not quite exact, was reached in an entirely different manner and  elicited the exact same combination - and that Alekhine recalled, not just a game he had played 21 years earlier, but the position and combination in that game looking at it from a mirrored vantage point.
