Hey everyone,

I wanted to make a YouTube video to highlight the six different ways you can draw a game of chess. Check it out!

Good video. I found it interesting. I'd like to know what software you're using to illustrate the moves. I also suggest you use something other than those bright red squares. Bright red color like that seems to distabilize concentration when it is dominant by area. I don't mind seeing red and white chessmen, but not the board. At least that is my feeling about that color.

Drawgood- yeah the colours are quite bright- but I use different ones for different sections so that people can see- I'll tone it down just a bit eh? :D Its cool you appriciated the video man, and the programs I used were Fritz 11 for Chess board, PowerDirector12 for editing and Debut Video Capture for filming :D

Uh, I count more than 6 (and technically the video is only 5 as Perpetual Check is a form of Three-fold Repetition).  If you try to separate 3-fold and perpetual check, then you have 9 ways, but really it's 8 as opposed to your 5:

1) Both players run out of time and one player calls Flag

2) One player runs out of time, and the opposing player that calls Flag has insufficient mating material, like a lone King, for example.  The side that ran out of time could still have a Pawn on the board, which makes this different than "Insufficient Mating Material" (See #6 below)

3) Three-fold Repetition (this may be continuous checks - a.k.a. perpetual check - or simply a repeat of position 3 times with the same player to move and said player having the same legal options all 3 times)

4) 50 move rule - Each side has made 50 consecutive moves with neither side making a capture or pawn move.

5) Stalemate - You are not in check, but with you to move, you have no legal move.

6) Insufficient Mating Material for both sides - like if you traded down to King vs King.

7) Mutual Agreement - I offer, you accept before you make your next move.

8) Victim of Cheating - If during a tournament, it is determined that a player has been cheating, first off, the cheater gets kicked out of the tournament.  However, other factors come into play:

  • The caught Cheater's "current" opponent gets a Win.
  • For all rounds played prior to the round in which the cheater was caught, any opponent that scored a draw against the cheater has their score for that game changed to a win, and for any opponent that scored a loss against the cheater has their score for that game changed to a draw!  Those that beat the cheater do not get a bonus half point.

So if the cheater was caught in round 5, and you played him in round 3 and lost, your score for round 3 is now a draw.

You forgot Insufficient Losing Chances in the instance that a losing side is trying to win on time.
