Someone's rule

I can't remember who, maybe Capablanca, but the rule goes along the lines of 'in the end game, put your pawns on the same square colour as your bishop'. I appreciate this is 'general advice' and you must do what the position dictates etc. but:

1) this goes against what we are generally taught in the middle game. Does it hold differently in the end game?

2) is this rule primarily in bishop vs knight endings?

John Watson, in his Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy - Advances Since Nimzowitsch, makes the following comment on the "general rule":

My advice is: keep the "general advices" in the back of your head, but always, always examine the position closely on your own to determine whether you are dealing with an exception. No easy way out, I'm afraid.
