Sore Losers

So, the opponent is now trapped and I'm one move from checkmater.  Then, he requests a draw.  I decline because this is not a situation where it will end in a draw.  He complains that it will lower his rating.  So, I offer him a rematch if he mores or resigns.  He resigns.  I offer the rematch and wait... and wait...  Then I finally click "new game" because it seems he doesn't want a rematch.

I feel bad declining a draw, but I think it's poor sportsmanship to ask for a draw when you are one move from losing the game.  What do you think?  Please give me your opinions.

THANK YOU!!!

Absolutely poor sportsmanship to ask for a draw when you have clearly lost. I can't get anyone to resign even when the game is over

I think you did the right thing

Just ignore the draw offer and whatever he writes in chat. If it’s his move - let his clock tick, if it’s your move - just move and checkmate him. End of story.

You did the right thing but he was probably a kid who was concerned about his rating so I can't really be too harsh on him.

Poor sportsmanship. Relax and keep playing.

Your opponent has to be prepared to lower the rating. It's not fair if your opponent only increases their rating without any loss of rating along the way. Asking for a draw in an obviously lost position definitely reflects poorly on the player.

V_Awful_Chess

If your opponent's rating didn't go down he'd continue to play against players too strong for him.

Having a correct rating is always a good thing, even if it looks better for it to be higher.

What you do is absolutely bizarre. Your opponent proves to be a bad sport by offering a draw in a lost position.

And then you offer him a rematch?!

Why would you want to play such a person again?

joshicus-maximus

He offered because he was being a good sport. Sore losers gonna sore. And good sports gonna good.... sport?

joshicus-maximus

Sport good 👍

I report poor sportsmanship all the time, it would be nice to get some feedback, and messaging from chess.com. Like system wide messaging that asking for a draw when you are in a loosing position is not allow, if you beat someone higher ranked then you, you need to take a rematch.. Look at the comment in this chat lol, how do we clean this stuff up?

drewthefather

Doesn't everyone know (wish they abided by) to resign before you leave a game you are loosing with 7 minutes left on a 10 min game.

nevergetsthewin

Yes is the answer to the original poster's question. It is poor sportsmanship as is stalling and abandoning games.

Totally agree. That is why I have chat turned off. Nearly everyone who talks in games is either trolling to try to put you off or spamming emojis.

As you climb the rating ladder, there is a much lower percentage of poor sports and and a much higher percentage of players with good etiquette. Overall most people who have requested chats with me have shown good manners. It was when I was below, say, 800 that I had the most problems with stalling and temper tantrums.
