Sorry But Einstein Was WRONG !

No not with his ideas about the Universe  lol. However there is the quote where he claims that Chess is a waste of time. So that brings up an interesting question: are all games and/or hobbies a waste of time ?

SoupTime4

As with anything.  If you allow something to become an obsession, where it interferes with the everyday essentials of life, then yes.

why do you care what einstein thinks about what you like to do?

Paul Morphy said something similar...
"The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentleman. The ability to play chess well is the sign of a wasted life."

Actually a true statement as he is now dead, and dead people aren't very smart at all!

Change "is" to "was" and you have a false statement until you also get rid of the word "not".

Thanks for all of the posts.

Yes, pretty much.

---   And so why do you care if I happen to care ( or perhaps if I do not care ) as to what Einstein thinks about what I like to do ( or perhaps what I don't like to do ) ?

Whether something is a waste of time or not depends on what you life goal is. If your life goal is to make as much money as possible, I believe chess is a waste of time.

Actually yes, most hobbies are a waste of time. Mostly that’s why many activities are referred to as “hobbies”. It implies you enjoy doing something which otherwise not very useful.

Why would Einstein be wrong about what he said about Chess? It is not his original idea. Many people view chess as a waste of time. If you think entertaining yourself is not waste of time, then it is not a waste of time at least not for you. But by itself, inherently, chess isn’t an activity that is useful.

---   Well yes we do need money to live here on this planet so there is that reality. Mind you we also like to have some enjoyable activities to help us to relax as well.

This is already an active forum topic that is 37 pages long.  We don't need more of this.

---   Oh well Please excuse me Mister Forked_Again ! I had no idea that you had taken over this site. Did you buy out the previous ownership by any chance ? Mind you I see that you have been here since back in 2008 so perhaps you feel that gives you some extra clout  lol.

NubbyCheeseking

Well he is right

Why make another forum on a topic that is being covered

badenwurtca

Then again perhaps you have not seen the funny side of this discussion. The other thread claims that Einstein was right whereas this thread states that Einstein was wrong ( still a bit confused are we ? ). Perhaps we need to draw you a picture ? These two threads are on opposite side of the argument ( seems simple enough to me  Rofl ). Furthermore the OP of that thread was only active at this site for 2 months back in 2017 and therefore is not around to give us more examples of his great and vast intellect ( for forked_genius ).
