Sound sacrifice?

Pretty self-explanatory in the description and the game, any input would be appreciated!

to @bleemu true, good catch!

I deleted my post as the posts which came after mine were far more helpful, and might I say deadly accurate in the case of myChessmyWay.

Or 14 Rd1+  ..Bd7  15 Qd5 seems convincing, possibly stronger than 15 RxN+

black's position is grim by move 11.

the f7 square is a clear target from knight and bishop.

white rules the d-file.

white is safely castled, black will never be allowed to.

11 qxg5 was a mistake. take the f7 pawn. it claims the rook.

obviously black has to move the queen which completes the move.

however,

11 Nxe5 is ok, but i prefer to trade bishops and then, depending upon blacks reply (say nxe7), play nxe5.

this forces the black queen to move.

queen has to be careful with placement here, but so many threats exist here it's literally insane.

key squares for the white queen are

h5, d5 and f3. all put pressure on the f7 square and also cover d1 for the rook.

possible queen king pins exist if you make the black queen move to d6. (i can see variations of this.)

d5 attacks the rook on a8. either queen or bishop.

here's one line i can see which looks grim for black. there are literally many threats as i say.

11. bxe7. nxe7.

12. nxe5. qd6

13. bxf7. kf8.(kd8 is losing due to the queen pin and the threat of bg8. rxg8, nf7+ wins queen. or bg8, qxq, rxq wins rook shortly after.)

14. qf3 (h5 looks good too). qxe5.

15. bd5+ wins rook.

for me the game is up for black by move 11.

hope those moves are right. apologies if not.

Sound?   If it poses tough  practical problems to your (human) opponent then it is sound IMO. Your move did that.

Yes, your sacrifice is sound, but your follow-up moves are not accurate:

julienr93

Hi all, thanks a lot for all the answers, @mychessmyway I very much appreciate the time you took to highlight all the variations with explanations. The engine did say Qd5 was a mistake but I had some trouble getting to the bottom of it just with the variations highlighted there. Definitely makes sense once you consider that simply trading bishops would have allowed me to end up with two pawns and the exchange to the good...

My only contention is that the knight is likely to get trapped... any thoughts on that line?

myChessmyWay

@julienr93

Hmm...

Okay, maybe you are correct. The knight can be trapped with some compensation--but not as much as I would have liked. A revision to my original analysis (hopefully) solves this. Of course, question me anytime:

Hopefully, this analysis seals the deal...
