Speculations on the Candidates' wild card

I would prefer that the players that just missed out (3rd in GP and rating lists, maybe 4th also) should play mini-matches to decide the wildcard, that way you get some less common players in there, but the player that wins has also earned their spot by right. Maybe the sponsor should organise this (think of all the monies, FIDE!).

What about creating 3 huge tournaments with 10 players: top 2 advance to candidates - that's 6 players + challenger + maybe a winner of a smaller tournament of 3rd and 4th players grin.png

It's called the grand prix 😁

I feel the Wild Card idea should exist for one reason. That is to ensure that a deserving player doesn't miss out on the tournament if he failed to qualify through the normal routes.

So giving the wild card to someone who is totally out of left field, makes little sense. I feel once the list of qualifiers is known, the next few highest elo players should have their names put in a hat and one pulled out and he gets to be the wildcard.

Funny you should say that...

I will go with the completely random draw route. As long as its done live and no human touches the envelopes. Just some powerball type machine pulling up a random ball. That way one could accuse anyone of bias.

If a human touches the envelope there will always be an element of oh the enveloped had a little dot in the corner and all that.

No no, 3 tournaments with different players, sorted by higher rating:

  • 1,4,7,10,13,16,19...
  • 2,5,8,11,14,17,20...
  • 3,6,9,12,15,18,21...

Such events couldn't be done exactly because the players have schedules and prior commitments, plus some players would already have qualified (like player #1, Magnus).

The cycle and method of selecting players is fine the way it is.  The only reason we have a wildcard is to help get sponsors

ArgoNavis

Kramnik gets the wildcard, because of his glorious past, because the sponsor is Russian and, most importantly, because of how he looks on those who won't clasify:

Do you even play chess, bro?

Kramnik is king! Like kingofshedinjas.

25 is the youngest age of any of the Candidates this year.  Last time it was 21.  FWIW.
