Spreading pieces from the very beginning of the game is fruitful and gives you variety of choices at later stages to drill the oponents or their pieces.

By "spreading" do you mean "developing"?

Spreading means Developing.

Another side to looking at the advantages of development is to look at your worst games. You'll notice that most of the time, a whole bunch of your pieces are on their home squares way too long into the game.
