Square Off - Chess Set
Thanks for your replies.
@jr87: Yes, that's what I do. In the Square Off app I am activating "random challenge" for 45+45 including both servers, chess.com and square off. Sometimes I also try "open challenge". But I wait for 5+ minutes and nobody joins. That's the point. But does it work for you? How long do you wait?
@yakuza_ronin Thanks for the advice. I will join these groups, I think it's a good idea to get in touch with "slow players" there.
Nonetheless, maybe I will try to establish a group like "Square off - Pairings" or even create a Whatsapp Group for this purpose...
I usually don't wait too long. I give SQ users 10-15 min while i get set up to play for a game, then if no one takes my open challenge, i go to chess.com. That only takes a few seconds depending the time control. 45|45 takes a little longer since chess.com users like fast chess. 15|10 or 30 / 60 minute games are quicker to find

I didn’t realize that they even had alternate pieces. I reached out to them. Thanks.
Still have not heard back. Last month I asked them about buying a set of pieces with the different color, and they didn’t offer it. I shouldn’t keep my hopes up. I wonder how their new limited B/W model is selling? It’s been discounted by $100 for a while now.
I had inquired about them offering additional set designs to be offered as additional sets available to special order but they did not go anywhere with it. It would be interesting to see them make the rosewood housing with a green and white chessboard, I bought one of the old fidelity wood housing chess computers years ago when they made that version and it was my favorite at that time.
Seems like it would only be natural for the to offer additional sets for those who end up losing a piece, dog chewing up a piece, cat playing with them and losing a piece etc. Might as well offer some additional designs.
from what I have heard you have use their pieces. I can only assume if you lost or damaged pieces they would sell you what you need. maybe someone who has had that issue would offer up his story. I know they helped me with a different issue
SquareOff replied:
1. They do NOT make other styles of chess pieces other than the French Knight design.
2, The offering for replacement chess pieces depends on the location of the requester. If you are in the region where they have the color of chess pieces that you requested in stock, then you’re in luck.
That’s all I got.
The "alternate" pieces were part of their introductory offer when they first started. I originally had them, and appreciated their look. Unfortunately, when I had to have the board replaced, the pieces were also replaced. I asked them about the change and the alternates were no longer being produced. It had to do with quality control.
So my order is in!
A couple of questions I can't see answered on their website.
How does pawn promotion work? How do you select a piece other than the Queen?
Can you turn off the beeps it makes when you make a move?
What time controls here on chess.com are suitable? Are 10 0 games playable or does the piece movement consume too much of your clock. What about 15 10?

When you promote a pawn you will see four options on your phone or tablet to pick from. They are Queen, Rook, bishop, or knight.
You cannot turn off the beep as far as i know, but i did here they were discussing it.
I play 15|10 on chess.com with square off set but it is more like bullet chess since the time consumption of the pieces. It is best to play longer games like 30 minutes, 45|45 or 60 minutes on chess.com
Looks like the SquareOff machine will finally have competition soon: @erik is about to announce the ability to use DGT eboards on chess.com.
BIG NEWS!!!!!
THERE IS A NEW SQUARE OFF SET!!!
Available on kick starter now (Link below)
Whats new??
- Supports blitz chess
- 1.5x faster speed
- More compact
- Silent Mode, no beeps or pressing to move pieces
- Built in AI coaching that talks to you and guides you to be a better player.
- Much more.
------ I am so satisfied with my last square off set this is a must have. For $99 you cannot beat that!
They only have 260 of the early bird specials left. I love my grand kingdom but transporting it here and there in the original box is some trouble so i am getting the neo to keep at another location and one for my son away at school. $99 is a no brainer for an auto sensory board compatible with chess.com.
Are there official alternate Dubrovnik pieces for the SquareOff system or did this reviewer just use his personal magnetic pieces?
