stalemate? why?

I seriously don't get how a stalemate works when I am at +18 and took a rook 1 turn earlier. Can someone explain how it works? And why I lost a point.

The only thing that matters in stalemate is does your opponent have any legal moves? If they don't then it is a draw by stalemate. If you draw against a lower rated player, you will lose some rating points.
So what is the difference between a stalemate and a check mate?

Checkmate is when your opponent is in check and has no way to get out of check.
this is stalemate because black isn't in check but doesn't have any legal moves
this is checkmate because black doesn't have any legal moves and is in check.
