Strange Characters in Arena 3.5.1 and other questions

Hi,

I am just beginning at Chess (I have learned the basics a long time ago from a good friend and then I forgot about it, until now).

Probably not the way to get started, but I have installed Arena 3.5.1 on my computer. It is working all right, but from time to time I see strange characters on my screen, like:

The  rest is English, so it is probably a glitch somewhere solved in Arena 3.6 or something like that. But maybe some of the readers know some tricks.

Another thing is the false positivity that Arena is given. I start with a rating (at least, I think that's a rating) of 2400. I wish I had this (mine is probably below 100 since I barely know how the pieces are moving).

I have a great time with the Chess coaches at chess.com (albeit bot or not). Aena is only a offline game for me.

On the language - It looks like Arena is using German. When you first install Arena, it should ask you whether you want to use German or English. It's possible that you didn't notice this option and accidentally left it on German. Try uninstalling Arena, then reinstalling it, making sure that you choose English.

On the 2400 rating - Arena is pretty stupid and just assumes that all engines are rated at 2400. It's up to you to change this setting for each engine if you want it to be more accurate. (Note that this 2400 rating is not the actual strength of the engines; It's just Arena's assumption of the engines' strength, which is of course wrong.) In other words, changing this number doesn't actually change the engine's strength - It is simply a value that you choose.
