student discount?!?!?

chess.com could send links to verify its a college student via a .edu address... all college email addresses end in .edu...
thats the way chess.net did it for my student discount on their site

2 gripes with that, not that it's a bad idea generally speaking:
1) For American institutions, yeah, but in Canada I think it's all .ca, so if they implement it, sucks to be me.
2) How do you distinguish students from alumni with email on the school's domain (my alma mater, for example, gives its alumni Email for Life, as they call it.)

very true absurd...
i dont know how canadian universities work, but here in the US we all get that .edu at the end of our email. perhaps there would be a way to ensure that its a university by the rest of the email (absurd@utoronto.ca or something like that, something that would distinguish it as a university email that would have to be validated) our universities here are also stingy with their server space and dont give us "email for life" although i would not mind having my old college email back!!!
i just thought this would be an interesting topic to discuss. as a student i get discounted travel accommodations (studentuniverse.com for example) not to mention i get free rail and bus transit via my current university, i get discounted movie tickets at local theaters and i even get discounts at certain restaurants and cafes. i figured since chess is a game of thought, there would be some encouragement on the part of the chess comunity to support student chess players and that there could be some discounts applied to students for the service that chess.com provides.
i saw on your profile that your also a student.. what are you studying??

I'm doing a Master's degree in Performance Studies (they call the program Theatre Studies, functionally it isn't). Groovy stuff, I like it. You?

im a phd student in neuroscience... not quite as groovy as your stuff!!
good to meet you

thats true... but im sure you could get some sort of ID and class schedule or report card.
im just saying there are ways to do it
i think ill talk to "erik" about giving some $$$

I know this is an old thread, but... I think that its absurd that chess.com doesn't offer any discounts on memberships! They offer nothing new or innovative except for a nice website layout. I am a student, and I know about 12 of my friends play on chess.com. They are also students. Many of them said they would pay for the premium membership if it was competitively priced, or if it was as cheap as an Xbox gold or PSN+ membership. Unfortunately chess.com wants to keep their membership as a niche product. They don't understand that there are much cheaper forms of entertainment out there that they are competing with. This is why when my membership expires this month, I will not renew. I've also purposefully disconected my credit card from my account so they can't auto bill!

Most schools give use student IDs that could be used as identification, as this is how most software does it. Source: am student.

Spotify has student discount, and not only for the US, but globally. They are using a service that checks every university/college in the world (that i know of), and they can authenticate that the person actually is a student.

i am currently a graduate student who fell in love with chess in college. since college, i have not had the time to play many games where i play a whole game in one sitting (time restraints and demands of working in a lab). this is why i really like playing on chess.com! i can take my time and make moves as i see fit. i also feel like i have been making chess.com enough of a part of my life that i should contribute to keeping this site alive. however, on my "broke ass" grad student stipend, i cant afford to give much $$$. therefore, i wanted to post this forum to see if 1) there are people in situations like myself that would not have the opportunity to play as much chess because of the amount of time it takes to play an entire game and 2) if you would consider paying a reduced student discount to help keep this service alive.
post away!!!
