Once you master basic tactics pattern, you should (I think) learn to CREATE tactics and not simply recognize them, because tactics don't come from nowhere, but from a superior position. I think that there must be some "signals" that you look for tactics, like exposed king, alignment, "fork" distance. ecc...
For example, his queen is on e8, his king on g7, my knight is on d5, if the king if on h7 then it might be a N fork, so I try to attract his king on h7 with my rook oh h file giving check on h7, ecc...
