No to the last part of your question. I just want to say that I don't think a C player has to memorize all those checkmates like reciting a list, but I'm sure they will come to mind if they see em coming up.

I do have Tactic books and am working through them.  I probably should have been more precise in my post:

I am speaking about the Chess Tactics Server in which one after the other after the other goes flying by.  I find myself able to do 100-200 per day.  I have peeked at under 1400 with a low RD.  It seems that I am stuck with 20 points of my high, and can solve them, but not fast enough for ratings points.  Does going at this hyper speed serve a particular purpose?  Have others found similar experiences there?

Yes, it's hard to keep up, and yes, it's worth it. Training yourself to recognize tactics without having to calculate them helps your calculation in the long run.
