Well, I would agree with you, if both sides are aware that the trash talk is jokingly done/done for fun, then it's acceptable and sometimes fun! But as you mentioned it is good to see if they are actually ok with it beforehand. However, it would be unacceptable if you either take it too far or do it when your opponent doesn't want you to (eg. When you don't know them well enough) Just my opinion though
Talking Trash in Chess over the board and Online

I honestly cannot stand trash talkers, and why people are trying to popularize this rude and annoying form of play. The "CoffeeHouse Chess" channel on Youtube is a prime example of this senseless phase. Trash-talking distracts from playing the best moves one can make, which defeats the purpose of playing Chess.

If I'm playing in the park for money then my opponent better be ready for the trash talk. I find the trash talker and play them so it's all in good fun. People are too sensitive these days. 🙄

naw you trash you cant play smh i superior chess grandmaster thats why i talk trashy trash you piece of trash hehehahahahahahahaha

What a riptide of gobbledygook. You know, I hate it when some people say "builds character." It's not your place to build anyone's character. Who appointed you Minister of Emotional Development? Sometimes you're just hurting people's feeling because a lot of people are sensitive and prone to taking things badly. Why would you want to make someone feel bad? Why do you have to be a jerk that way?
This is not Coffee Chess. Those people know each other and the ribbing is good-natured. Notice that they are much kinder to children and people that they don't know. The ONLY time they ramp up the trash talking is when the opponent gives it back. Online people are just monsters because don't have to look someone in the face. The vast majority of "trash talking" takes the form of just ugly insults or losers being sour and spiteful.
The ONLY time it's appropriate to trash talk is when you know the person and know that they'll be okay with it; otherwise, you're just being a bumbaclot.

The problem with me is that I'm not psychic. I don't know who you are. I don't know if you're joking or were brought up wild pigs or if you are acting out your broken, loveless childhood of neglect by lashing out at strangers randomly. Online it's almost always one of the latter. In the park, someone is trying to hustle you, so it's just what you sign up for. If you're just trash talking random strangers, especially if you're beating them mercilessly, you're just a nasty dude.

chess is a gentlemens game isnt it? Do you think its acceptable to talk trash to people? in a playful jocular way? I will for sure if the other person is okay with it, ill check out their vibe and see if they get flustered. When I play people over the board i love when they talk smack and get popped in the mouth metaphorically. I suppose alot of people let their play do the talking.
Gentlemens game??

When the Botez sisters were travelling the world the weeks before the WCC and getting people to trash talk with them, did you consider them monsters?
They have to sell their product somehow... Who would watch them if they just played and didn't talk? However, they don't really come across as experienced trash talkers... So I doubt they have done that a lot with the cameras off.
In a casual game against someone you know personally and who is OK with it (or maybe even likes it), I see absolutely no problem with trash talking. But I guess that's something you already know yourself.
Otherwise, it is certainly not OK. Definitely not online. And even if it is OTB and you ask beforehand. Some people are just not assertive enough to say no.
