Are you a team player ? Imagine the following scenario : You are a member of a 4 man team and your team has won  on 2 boards with 2 games remaining, yours being one of them. Your opponent offers you a draw in a worse position and he is lower rated by 200 points. Your team captain tells you to take the draw as it will clinch victory for the team, what would you do ?

Easy! He is our Captain for a reason! Accept!

So why is it that Americans lose the Ryder Cup to the Europeans so frequently?

There is a 'me' but without it you only have 't' and 'a'

Team chess isnt for all chess players and if you arent willing to put your own results second to team results then you shouldnt play team chess. I like team chess and have never failed to follow the captains instructions even though I didnt always want to.

I imagine that if you don't follow the captain's instructions you won't be on the team much longer.

I was in the following situation two season ago:

Six board match in a National knock-out competition, I was playing top board and the scores were tied at 2.5 each. My position was looking quite drawn, but a draw would allow the opposition to win on board count.... a draw was no good to us. After taking advice (match situation advice being allowed) from the team captain, I decided to play an inferior move  which made the position unclear and complicated (a speculative pawn sacrifice to unbalance the position). My opponent who had played soundly all along started to take a lot more time, ran into time trouble, played a "lemon" on move 39 and lost a piece. The feeling of being the hero of the hour is a rare one (in my long experience, anyway,) but very fulfilling!  I'm not a fan of team chess, but sometimes I feel beholden enough to make an appearance for the club, county etc. Team chess is, as the name implies a team game, and must be played in this spirit.

Wow, nice story!

I respect people not willing to make a "sacc" for the team but they should stay out of team play! If you're in, you're in!
