The 9...h5!? English Attack

Mainline_Novelty

So, recently I've been looking into adding the English Attack against the Najdorf into my repertoire. The race attack positions really appeal to me, and it's also theoretically the best try for an advantage, so it's not like I'll have to ditch it for something more "accurate" as I improve. My two issues were the following :

1) 6.Be3 Ng4!? ---- This isn't a huge issue because the 6.f3!? move order avoids it, so I have that as a backup choice incase I really don't want to play against Ng4.

2) 6.Be3 e5 7.Nb3 Be6 8.f3 Be7 9.Qd2 h5!?

Black halts White's pawn storm in it's tracks, and so far nothing I've seen has really struck me as positions I'd enjoy playing for White. Any suggestions?

EDIT : Additional question --- anyone know any good English Attack books from White's perspective?

Please note, we're talking about the Najdorf, not the Dragon :)

hmm ive never seen this h5 but it seems like black is weakening his kingside most likely black will castle on the queenside which is good for white since black has lost his c-pawn so the defense is not as good also if black does castle on the kingside white can play G4 opening the h-file and its going to be very hard for black to defend H5 to me seems like a bit of a risky move but if you know how to handle it you should be fine

i highly doubt any dragon player would play Ng5

When i was studying the najdorf as black, this was one of my favorite variations, black almost never castles in this variation, and often enough, he plays Kg8/ or g6/Kg7 to safely attend to his king.

To add to this, making sure white never plays g4 against is a very nice idea, and often white's strategy backfires if he manages to do so, because it will cost many tempi.

Was there any particular line you didn't enjoy playing against as Black? Because that diagram is not very encouraging...

I never really investigated it intensely. Black seemed to be doing OKAY, but you should consult a real sicilian expert on this line. I am sure white has improvements that make h5!? backfire. It is nevertheless a very fun line for black to play.

Can anyone refute 6...Ng4 in the english attack after 6.Be3

Knight098

There is a quality chess book on the english attack which i think is pretty good, it covers critical lines against 6...e6 as well as ...e5 which is nice(It also has a chapter on 9...h5). Also with the f3 move order black has ideas of Qb6 which can be annoying so be careful. Good luck!

@knight098 : What book is this? :P

Are there any good books for the black side of the sicilian that you know of pfren?

CLC4life

Usually you play Be2 first before developing the DS bishop so the knight cant kick the bishop away and then you follow up with f3, then proceed with your attack to rush down the board and wipe your opponent out. The problem with developing the DS bishop before the LS bishop is that it can be met with Qb6 which can be devestating.

WanderingPuppet

i took danny's chess.com university course on the english attack and it was gr8.  books i don't recall - gm ftacnik's opinion in gm repertoire (schevinengen/najdorf book what to play against the english attack is interesting - maybe this is from Black's perspective.)

nowadays players are trying many different approaches with h3, Qf3 and f2-f4 in one go for instance.

some game i looked at recently.  also anand and caruana have had interesting games from white's perspective (although anand was much worse against L'Ami).

somebody told me that Aagaard, Jason!?, the scottish player [Arrrrrggh garr? forgive spelling] wrote a very good book on the English attack structure.  i haven't read it.

basically you have a 3 v 2 queenside majority, you play for g5-g6 if 0-0 and f4 if Black doesn't castle; and be ready for d5.  you can get a comfortable english attack against any sicilian against the kan (5 Bd3 and White's play is easy with experience) and sveshnikov (white can play for a draw in so many ways but how to play for a win here!?)... and a few sidelines like an early Qb6 or Ng4 in the Najdorf but White has good ways to play against these.  any decent .ctg book created from playchess engine room can give you an idea on the theory that has been played too many times.

Thanks for the help, Petro :)

btw I prefer not having to play against the Sveshnikov at all so I play the 3.Nc3!? move order.

More or less the same pattern suggested by FirebrandX, but 10.Na5 first looks more precise. Not that scary, but no easy sailing for Black, too.

wait can't black just play
