The difficulty of advancing from FM to IM & then GM .

Although I'm never going to get a high rating & are just satisfied to enjoy this great game , I have always admired those who managed  to advance up .

What sort of effort would a talented player need to even have a chance ?

On a side note for your amusement , back in the early 70's I was playing GM Lajos Portisch in a simul ,

He was moving quickly between the many players in the early stages & stopped dead at my board the moment I made my move  !

This caused an immediate surge of spectators to gather behind me to see what wonderful move I must have played   .

A few second more  passed when he grinned & said something in his native Hungarian whilst pointing to my king & queen that had been setup on the wrong squares   surprise.png

After the adjustment I went on to lose badly , but enjoyed my few seconds of delusion ''''

Noob if this really happened, you shouldn't adjust your queen and king , you obviously don't know the rules,  you should of continue as it is and be fine , but the guy simply hustled you in to switching and making his position much better if not completely winning.

ESP-918 ,

I was in the wrong with the way the King & Queen were set up in the first place 'those boards were all ready before I took my place , silly me just played my natural moves with black with out checking ,

I was a young man back then .

Now I'm an old man  sad.png

So if your king and queen in the wrong does it mean you MUST switch them ?  Do you know the rules?

I just changed  them to the right squares , he made his move & moved on & my game continued .

What are the rules pertaining to this situation please ?
