The fix isn't more chess. It's better chess
1. No bullet games. More rapid or classical games.
2. Engine off during the analysis session.
3. Your own game analysis - play, analyze, play that position again
4. Avoid playing other chess variants like bug house, Chess 960, .
5. Walk , exercise and sleep well
Improvement in chess isn't just about playing more games; it's about making better moves. Some players engage in numerous games yet remain stuck, not because they lack time, but because true growth comes from how each move influences your thinking. Watching countless videos is ineffective without reflection. Real change happens when effort meets awareness.
Avoid fast bullet matches. While they might seem helpful, they build hand speed rather than critical thinking skills. Instead, focus on slower time controls, like rapid and classical formats, which require deeper thought and calculation and present genuine challenges—this is where growth occurs.
Analyzing your moves is crucial. Many players skip this step; while computers can suggest moves quickly, they take away your independent thought. Examine each position on your own, embrace mistakes, and ask questions. This process leads to true clarity.
Spending an hour on self-analysis is often more beneficial than three hours watching others. Real progress comes from engaging directly with your gameplay.
Be wary of flashy chess variants like bughouse or Chess960; they can scatter your focus. What truly moves you forward are clear goals, consistent practice, and a steady direction.
Having a coach can provide essential guidance, helping you stay on track and identify blind spots. Your mindset matters—spending an hour away from screens before bed can enhance your focus and reduce distractions.
Patience is key; expecting quick results can hinder progress. Improvement takes time, and the journey requires facing discomfort. Growth arises not from just spending more time practicing, but from how you approach the process. True progress begins when you learn to work through ideas effectively and stay focused on your path forward.
