The 'Pointlessness' of Chess

Chess helps develop and exercise your brain. I am teaching my 3 year old to play chess. He just loves it and asks me to play all the time. Chess is a super thing for the human race to do because it take huge brain power. And actually brain power is what we need to survive....

Pointlessness

Stanislaus, you are hitting it right on the bullseye, you say chess can teach you many lessons such as patience, perseverance, and make you aware of intellectual strength. That is all fine and dandy - why would someone not want these things? Well, first you must ask yourself why would someone want these things, why does someone need these lessons? And that, intertwines with the point of life itself.

This conversation seems pointless.

It is interesting that you would create an account merely to spend your time preaching on chess.com. I would say preaching on chess.com is more pointless than playing chess.

Exactly!!!  Using this site for that purpose is duplicitous.

Pointlessness

Why do we need to survive idosheepallnight? Asking what things such as chess give us is asking even more deep what the point of life itself is.

EinsteinFan1879, is chess.com not here for me to make an account? Would you rather have me playing chess and talking about chess? Filling my head with chess like everyone else? There is nothing truly fun in that.

Theempiremaker

How can you regard an activity that you enjoy as pointless unless you are fooling yourself ?

Pointlessness

Theempiremaker, it seems as though you have never felt this way about anything in your entire life, but when you do maybe you will understand. If one does not believe in something higher, such as maybe a point in life. Then one cannot see the pointlessness of other things in life, such as chess.

interesting debate going on here...=)

I like chess. I think it's a great game with good stimulating abilities and awesome aesthetic value. (To those who can appreciate it of course) It's a hobby that doesn't cost much to pursue (think photography!) It's timeless and spans well over a few hundred years of history.

That being said, I can understand why some people would consider chess a complete waste of time. Some people have an affinity for some activities while others don't.

I don't like cricket. I think it's a waste of time. =p

Chess does nothing to better humanity. Not that it should, not that it could, but it is not doing anything productive in any way at all. Time is limited on earth, anyone can go at any time. So chess can be for fun I suppose, but really it is pointless.

The more the universe seems comprehensible, the more it also seems pointless.

Pointlessness

This thread is not the point of life, the point of life is for you to understand the point of life. So that you may reach what is the point of life. I have only created this thread so that you may see chess as not a behemoth, but nothing.

Up until know I to have felt Chess, like life, was pointless.  But now I

realize why I have been living, and why I started playing chess.  It was

fate or destiny that guided my life, to this game, to this website.  To

dwindle away hours of play and study.  All to arrive at this moment it time,

this bridge to cross, this fly to swat.  It has all been to meet you...

     POINTLESSNESS !!

You give my life, my game, my entity,   purpose.

Oh my god!  You have convinced me.  I'm giving up chess so that I can focus more on my drinking!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand what u mean pointlessness, but what meaning could the purpose you gave your life possible mean when your dead? when u no longer exist to recognise what you accomplished?

Pointlessness

Great quote by Steven Weinberg.

gambitattack, cricket is just as much as a waste of time as chess. Many things are a waste of time in life, unless of course you believe (such as I) that living your life is living the time that was set out for you to live, that said, does not mean everything must be how it will become. Some things are more important than other things, its just how it was built. And if you believe otherwise, then perhaps you are satan himself, or hopefully just under his control :)

DaPharoah, the point of life is whatever you make of it, you are living your life just as I am living mine, I believe strongly in my point, and I am willing to do anything it takes (not contradicting) the point which I believe in. If you believe the point of life is to play chess, or achieve ultimate fame, or raise children and teach them basic human functions, then that is your point in life, until you realize that those points of life are only under one incontestable point of life. Which is death, and the rights to live after it.

victhestick

yes, one of the many points of life!

Pointlessness

And that is it right there DaPharaoh, you do live after death, think of it as a - rebirth. How do I know this you might ask? Well, what is the wrong in knowing this? Because in right being from wrong, which humanity is based upon - is assuming there is a point. This is the inconstestable point I speak of.

Lets settle it with a vote: is chess the point of life?

  Yes.  One.

Yes (along with booze and sex).  Two.

I don't think anyone will ever really know the reason why they are here on this planet. The waste of time is trying to figure out questions that don't have any concrete answers. Just enjoy the short time that you have and try to fill your life with the things you enjoy as much as possible. That in and of itself brings you some meaning to life. :)
