The Weaker Sex?
N. May Karff, later called Mona May Karff, was virtually unknown in the US in 1937 when this game was played. She moved from Palestine to Boston in 1938 and won the US Women's Championship that year ahead of Mary Bain and Adele Rivero.
Before moving to the U.S., Karff's first notable chess activity was to play for Palestine in the Women's World Championship held in Stockhold during the Olympiad being held there. The championship was, of course, won by Vera Menchik, but Karff came in a respectable 6th place behind Mary Bain (who attended in place of Adele Rivero who couldn't get off work or afford the expenses) who would become a U.S. women's champion and Sonja Graf of Germany who would also move to the U.S. and become a U.S. women's champion.
Karff maintained a well-known-secret romance with Edward Lasker. Dr. Lasker was 25 years older than she, but friends recall them as a perfectly matched couple.
