Never quit!  Take a few weeks off, and then come back and try again!

You couldn't possibly be worse than Issac Asimov:

My brother, Stanley, who watched us play, learned the moves and, eventually, asked if he might play. Ever the indulgent older brother, I said, "Sure," and prepared to beat the pants off him. The trouble was that in the first game he ever played he beat me.

In the years that followed, I discovered that everyone beat me, regardless of race, color, or religion. I was simply the most appallingly bad chess player who ever lived, and, as time went on, I just stopped playing chess.

Best chess advice ever. Sometimes you can get too wrapped up in something and you need a break.  Then when you come back, you can actually start improving and learning.

Focus on one thing, If you wanna get better at blitz/bullet then figure out books to read and ways to practice to get better at that. If you want to get better at standard then finds ways also. But stick to one thing and work at getting your raing up gradually and stay away from playing 10 games a day. Play 2 AT MOST! and analyze the game, work at it slow. I had another account and i used to be rated around 1000 that was around.... like the end of august and i told myself ok this is enough, im sick of being in the 1000 range, im getting out of this crap. So i studied (msg me if you wanna know how) every single day and i told myself im going to play ONE game a day because i don't want to drain myself and that way i can really figure out whats going on by analyzing that game. So a month gone by i went up too 1200, i got stuck around 1250 for a few days, bout a week i'll say, it was aggravating, i'd win one game then i'd lose the next then win again so i was stuck UGH! so i took a couple days off and buckled down studied then got back to it and won 6 games in a row in 6 days and immediately went to the 1300 level. Then i easily reached to the 1350 level and then i got stuck literally for 2 months, from oct-ish to dec-ish. And im just breaking out the 1300 level now. but i had to take a LONG break inbetween and figure out what i was doing wrong, i basically had to reinvent myself completely, i use completely different openings than before, my understanding of chess is at a higher level than before, the way i approach the board is different, (sorry im a HUGE dragon ball z fan) so ummm yea can you say i felt like i just reached the super saiyan level lol. And now i still do my daily pracitices everyday, samething, 5-10 hours of training everday, computer study (mainly use computer (fritz) for new opening) strategies, lil bit of tatics trainer tho i need to hop on it and do more, read books watch videos not often but every now n then and sometimes just for the heck of it i'll look at a couple live games from carlsen and naka anand etc. But really you shoulnt quit, just take a break and come back but in the break study but not too hard then when your ready start training like a dog. Go completely crazy then have your periods of rest becasue having all those posisitons, pieces, openings, theories etc will literally CLOUD your mind if you DONT rest. SO REST SOME. then in about a month i bet you a million dollars you will come back to the board with a new UNDERSTANDING of chess. You cant get better at chess if you dont get a better UNDERSTANDING of chess. The only reason why people are better than you is because they have understandings of the game on a deeper level but you too like me can reach those levels, it might take us longer but hell, im 23, i have time i dont know how old you are but you have time after all you are spending time to play. But anywho, thats my 2 cents. Hope i helped. And remember we ARE ALL GOING THRU OUR OWN BATTTLES, someone is probably laughing at you but guess what, someone is laughing at them too, we are all trying to break out of our brackets, like i said, it took me 2 months to barely get out of the 1300. So don't be mad. In time you'll get where you trying to go but if you dont go you wont be anywhere but where you stood right when you gave up. A journey of 1000 steps always starts with the first step bro.

Disagree. I've done tens of thousands and barely improved since I started.

A little update for you all since i was last on here, I've got onto online chess, giving myself more time to think about my moves and strategy. I've got not one but two great guys who are helping me out in whatever way they can. (a huge thank you to Mike and Seb, I really appreciate you guys giving me some of your time, you guys are great) And a massive thank you to you all for your advice and support. I know it's only a game, but it's still something we all strive to get better at. So sharing your thoughts, I cant thank you enough. And to the people who put silly abusive put-downs on here. Again, thank you. I'll hunt you down, play against you, beat you, and make you feel very small one day. Maybe not today, but soon. Count on it.....

Its great that chess.com users help others with a commented game when someone is stuck. I played such a game with someone the other day and I hope others will keep on helping others too!

There is one big condition to this: if the teacher is willing to discuss the game, the learner should be talking as well. If the teacher is talking and gets little or no response (even after asking)... its wasted time. (this did not happen to me, stating in general)

DRAGON BALL Z! THE GREATEST ANIME/CARTOON EVER!!! LOL late 80s and 90s babys know what it is lol.

I used to be a 900 rated blitz and bullet player when I first joined last July. Im not at a level I want to be at yet, but I have improved alot in the last couple of months. And if I were to be to so bold, if you're struggling on how to get better, I'd be happy to offer you a few tips:

  • Watch people that are better than you play. By this I don't mean that you should watch a ton of standard games from Chessgames.com and attempt to make an analysis out of all of them. Just watching some of the blitz games played in the Live Chess server and trying to understand the moves can help you understand at least the natural way to approach things in a chess game.
  • Try to understand some of the patterns in chess. When I say patterns, Im talking about recurring themes that you often see in chess games. Not just specifically checkmating patterns like backrank, smoothered, etc. but tactical patterns (recognizing forks, skewers, signals in alignment etc.), and positional patterns (recognizing isolated pawns, passed pawns, backward pawns, etc.) This has a lot to do with simply studying chess, but recognizing these things can help you figure out what you shoud be looking for in the current state of the chess game.If you know you're struggling with recognizing a particular pattern in chess, you might want to search for resources that help you in that regard, whether it be a video online or a chess book.
  • Choose when you play. A lot of people have said this already, and it's good advice Laughing. If you're feeling frustrated because you're losing a lot, or if you feel like you're playing too much and not getting any better, it's probably not a bad idea to take a mental anxiety break, and do something completely unrelated to chess for a while before you get back and play some more.
Hope this helps! And don't give up!

I have aspergers, and that joke is not funny at all. I seriously think you should take a break.

I noticed most of the chess players on chess.com who are rated under 1200 all use engines. I've went over many of my games and was alarmed. I started realizing this when I would beat a 1600 rated player yet lose to a 1050 rated player. Something wasn't right. And sure enough, engine use.

Chess.com is full of rampant cheats. I barely play anymore. I got so frusterated. The site does nothing to combat cheats.

In the end, I realized chess is just some elusive game in which nobody really gives a rats crap what your rating is. You could be a GM and 99.999% of the world could care less. I think you are probably completely wasting your time.

I say this because a hobby or something you love is supposed to make you feel good and give you enjoyment. Chess gives no enjoyment. Only frustration. And the worst part about chess is you can see your stats go down every time you lose. It's like investing in the stock market and seeing your investment tank. There is really no pleasure in this game.

I started reading and found much more enjoyment. I'd rather read a book on Mark Twain or Ghandi and learn something amazing than read some retarted chess book in which they are all the exact same.

The reason why a GM is better than a beginner is just because he memorized openings and mating/tactical patterns. It really has nothing to do with skill.  It comes down to who can memorize the most. There is a reason why every great chess player has aspergers. They memorize things easily. Every top player on the circuit today is autistic. If you are not autistic, you are wasting your time. The highest your rating will get is probably 1500.

I've won 5 games in a row but I'm at a low level cry.png cos I've had to resign too much to do something else.

Well, I have a similar problem too, I can't progress any further, however, seeing your one of your games I am pretty sure you can actually progress quite easily even without calculating much. My problem si calculation and tactics, yours probably too, but the basic errors seen in your game can be improved just by watching a couple of videos of Gotham chess or any other popular chess coach. You seem to have no openings, no knowledge of pawn structure, just mindlessly throwing stuff forward (including the kitchen sink) at your opponent. It requires no calculation, just sticking to the basic principles, even chat GPT can generate them easily in bullet points. If you stop making unnecessary obvious weaknesses in your position, you should see some improvement even without calculating 3 or even 2 moves ahead. For instance, a good thing to learn is never to defend your e5 pawn with 2...f6, a total blunder, but this knowledge alone can save your a lot of trouble. If you don't improve beyond that, fine, but anybody can learn these basics just from watching a couple of chess videos.
