An IM told me that most players focus on the pieces and not on the squares. How does focusing more on the squares help?

Here's an example from Martin Weteschnik's excellent book, Chess Tactics from Scratch in The Discovered Attack example below. Note that the square highlighted is one that allows Black to achieve Checkmate, so paying attention to key squares as well as pieces is important:
