How many people believe you have to be a thinker to good at chess?

Chess is all about using logical thinking. We try to evaluate all the possibilities in any given position and from that we use logic to determine the best move.

Sure you need to understand the intricacies of the game to advance. This applies to anything. But those who have superior logical thinking are also the ones who are going to excel in this game.

A agree with both of those statements.  Notice that Tony said, "chess thinking."  I'm glad he put it that way.

I think in a broad sense, you have to think, but chess is much more about pattern recognition and memory . . . that's most important in my humble opinion because we have limited time to play each game.

As far as the classical question of chess and intelligence.  I would proffer that chess has no statistically significant measure to intelligence... although it seems that smart people flock to chess because of the indentity that is implicit within the game -- albeit cultural.  If it it does, it only measures a certain type of "thinking."  These types of conversations are held about Poker and Bridge too.

I been spacial ability/IQ is important for the best chessplayers. It helps one to recognize patterns. Bobby Fischer had a genius level spacial IQ and Garry Kasparov's spacial IQ has been measured at 195, which points him around .001 percent of the entire population! If those are 2 of the greatest of all time right off the bat,  then I see some correlation.
