Your opponents can't impact your clock. The server handles the official clocks and sends clock updates to the client after each move.

If you are experiencing lag, it could be due client/device latency or an issue between you and the site. For things you have control over, check out the following:

Your download speed and your connection stability are separate things.

It’s really strange, but I have lag issues when I’m on my Wi-Fi and they go away when I get off my Wi-Fi—when I’m m on straight data, granted I am somewhere that’s very open to the data connection. I don’t lag at all then and my games go much better. The only catch is, I always forget that I turned off my Wi-Fi and then I burn up a lot of data doing something else. So the key is to remember that you turned off your Wi-Fi so you can turn it back on once you’re done playing chess.

I also meant to say, I only notice it toward the end of a game, because that’s when the moves start to get really fast. So many times (when I forget to turn off my Wi-Fi) I quickly scramble to my settings DURING a game on my phone and turn off my Wi-Fi in order to save my game. This only happens with my home Wi-Fi, and maybe some other locations, but mostly home Wi-Fi. It doesn’t happen at hotel Wi-Fi’s or many other WiFi’s. But try it, try turn off your Wi-Fi sometime and see if your lag goes away. What’s cool about my plan is, even when I run out of data—because my carrier still provides me with data, just a lot slower—it’s still better for playing chess than my home Wi-Fi.

On a device with multiple connections, such as a cellular device with wifi, the operating system is going to potentially swap between the connections, trying to use the best connection at the time. That can cause issues connecting to the live server, resulting in dropped packets and packet resends.

As you noticed, you'll get better connectivity when only one data service is active.

I too have some random lag issues. Don’t do too well at bullet as a result but make the best of it.

I noticed it occurs more if I’m using my VPN.

Connection through a VPN adds more overhead, so will almost always increase lag.
