Time Management

Hi, I am new to this game but have been gaining ground over the passed week. My problem is I am a very slow player as I have to consider and reconsider every possible and action and reaction methodically. Last night I dominated a 30 minute game, was 7 points ahead and near a checkmate but lost due to running out of time. I just played a 10 minute game where I also dominated and was 9 points ahead and on the verge of mate but yet again lost because I ran out of time. I won those games in my eyes but why does the rule say if you run out of time you lose when I was so far ahead and with so many checks. Also how can I manage my time better.

Because that's the rule. That may sound facetious, but that's all there is to it. You might have been ahead in material, but you were able to do so in more time than your opponent, and, more importantly, in more time than the rules allowed. Therefore, you were really *not* ahead, nor were you winning.
