Tips for preparing for an upcoming tournament game?
For an evening game perfect preparation is half-hour walk, then ten minutes going over some chess puzzles, then a few minutes collecting your thoughts, adjust all your pieces on the board, shake hands, play well. Instead what usually happens is fight traffic on the road to the tournament hall, waste precious minutes looking for a parking spot, find they moved the location to the upstairs room, arrive at the board with two minutes already off your clock, oh and by the way the team captain put you on a different board so you have black instead of white.
If you are due to play an over the board tournament game in a day or two and know whether you are going to be playing as Black or White but do not know about the opponent, what is the best way to prepare for the game?
It depends whether you have the sort of memory where you can memorise lines. Also endgame practice. And like tygxc, I would also do outdoor exercise. I always did and it didn't stop me winning.
I have found that I often play better after I have gone for a walk, so I can believe that.
I'm nowhere near the best at memorizing lines but can retain some percentage of what I study and that improves with repetition. So with one day to prepare I can probably learn something like 4 or 5 short lines.
