Tournament Points

Could someone please explain how tournament points are allocated to an event?  It seems to be totally random.  I am in one tournament of 100 players that has 336 points allocated (an average 0f 3.36 points per player).  Another of my tournaments has 36 players and 689 points (an average of 19.1 points per player).

Also, how are the points allocated to the various placegetters within one tournament?

Why is it so difficult to see how many points you have won, and so easy to see how many points your opponant has?

Please clarify. It is very easy to see one's own points.
