Tournament sure do take a while!!!

Please note, this is post is not meant as a complaint, just an observation.

I'm currently playing a 3-day tournament (no vacation), starting with 48 player (6 per group, 5 simultaneous games with 3 advancing.  We are 87% done.

We are about to hit a year!!!  That sure is a long time.

Obviously, I understand I could have chosen a shorter time per move, or something with a lower avg time/move if I wanted things to go faster.

Is this typical?

Myself included, this is a very geek forum.  Has anyone worked out an estimator on how long tournaments typically take based on the parameters.

How many moves do you assume in a typical game?  How much do you discount the worst case scenario?

Yes, that is typical. I would assume 40 moves on average for a game and you should also assume that at least one player is likely to use all the available time, if not more than one player, regardless of their average time per move. So at maximum, on a 3 days/move tourney, each move pair will take 6 days.

It is very likely that things will go much quicker, especially the opening, so maybe 80% would be a good estimate, but it only takes one set of player to go the maxs. Even then, things could go longer since any one game could go a lot longer than 40 moves and 3 days for each player.
