hi can someone answer this for mewhat does you have to hae 10% time out to play in some tournaments

Skeptikill

basically if you run out of time in a game you automatically lose if you do not have timeout protection (which is if you are not a paying member).

When you run out of time you automatically lose the game! Along with this is game is counted as a time-out. If you have a timeout ratio higher than 10% you cannot play in most( not all) tournaments!

Timeout ratio   =  (Games timed out in) / (total games)

Also some people are really upset when you use vacation time during a tournament.  Some think you shouldn't even enter a tournament if you are going to use vacation time.

Culleto... 33%, really?

The question is why people with high (>10%) timeout rates cannot enter tournaments - it's because it spoils the tournaments if people enter and then just give up their games on time half way through the tournament.

thanks for that

many think using vacation during tourney play is fine. they just don't comment on it.  every big tourney will have someone else using vacation time so it won't slow anything down unless you are in the last game to be played for the round.  i have a tourney that is in round 1 right now that started in april 2008. obviously there will be some vacation time.  coorespondence chess tournaments have a long precedent for taking years to complete.

I wonder if someone could tell me how it works - if my opponent is using vacation time, will I know that?  Will he let me know how long he will be away?  Or am I left in the dark wondering?

your "mt status" comes up and tells wht's up for your vacation to people.  some people don't change it and some do.  My status says something about me getting my butt kicked in round 2 of tournaments but if i take a vacation i would normally justify it here and give some expectation of when ill come back.  i think most wont say when they are coming back, and all you are left with is their vaca limit.
