Troubles With Bigger Pieces

Does anyone besides me have a harder time getting a clearer picture of the board with bigger pieces? I use a standard 2.25'' square silicon board and my pieces have a 3.875 king I feel like I have a harder time seeing the board tactically and strategically then with smaller pieces or online. Is this weird? If so does anyone have any suggestions to help? I played my brother in law tonight and he hadn't played with bigger pieces like this before either and noticed it took an adjustment to get used to.

Thanks!

It looks more like an online 2D board??

Whatever works. On real-life boards, I can only concentrate properly if we're using Staunton pieces (or a design close to that).

Man, yesterday I indulged in some blitz games and was losing and losing. I made up my mind I suck at blitz and then I got paired against a really strong player - an FM.

I beat him, he got mad and wanted a rematch and I beat him again!

His regular FIDE rating is 2369!

In fact I sometimes experience the same problem.  For me I attribute it to a field of view issue.  When the board (and of course the pieces on it) occupies a smaller percentage of my visual field of view, I feel that I can get a better image or feel for the physical-positional relationships of the pieces.  It's kind of like what happens when you are sitting in the first row of a movie theater, closest to the screen.  In that case you feel that you have to move your eyes back and forth (left-right) to perceive and process everything on the screen.  Sitting further away from the screen causes it and the images to occupy a smaller percentage of your field of view, making it easier to take everything in without having to move and refocus your eyes and mental attention, thus making it easier to process all of the visual information.

In fact I always zoom out when playing online so that the board occupies a smaller portion of my screen.

Sounds like the old vaudeville joke.

Doctor: Does your arm hurt when you move it like this?

Patient: Yes.

Doctor: Then stop doing that!

It's not a tournament game. Use a set, presumably smaller, that works for you and your brother.

I used to think that I played better blitz OTB than online, but it is just that I like hitting the clock, and there is no Bonnie Tyler playing on the background happy.png.
