True or False Chess is a Draw with Best Play from Both Sides

why agree to a draw just because the position is complex?

ponz111

Nobody should agree to a draw just because a position or the position is complex.

najdorf96

Happy New Year, everyone. Hmm.

Indeed. Obviously, as the OP had once surmised...Championships are trending to an 'drawish' nature. Paraphasing, of course, but his sentiments are as obtuse. There is noo equity: Magnus's win margin does not give anyone reason to believe or substantiate a "99.99%" certainty that Chess is 'probably' a draw. None.

And these are Non-Centaurian players (that the OP originally stated true chess is determined)

najdorf96

I continue to believe (as mentioned in many posts throughout this thread) to aid, not dominate, human chess. Collaboration or no. Centaurian chess (half human/half engine).

najdorf96

Fact: The Human brain is far more complex or more powerful than any known engine or computer.

Pundits foreseeing Chess as an draw are too short-sighted. Hello! Future players will be able to calculate at near-computer speeds, go farther in the opening, come up with unthought of complex positions (which to them, are "basic") dynamic and unfathomable to at least an 100 moves!!

'Cuz your brain hurts. Someone said Yasser Seirawan said he once got to the 40 moves time control w/ Garry Kaspirov and his brain shut down. He said he couldn't think for like 37 minutes. So he took the perpetual check. I'll see if I can find the game.

....and Ponz ?....so there4 ur #1812 isn't necessarily true my luv.

23...c4?? (1:28)

When making this move, Garry literally screwed the pawn into the c4-square, then he rubbed the pawn on the square hard enough to rock the table. I was so delighted by this move and its accompanying motions that I couldn’t repress a smile. I wanted to tip-toe around the board; give Garry a peck on the cheek, let out a small, “thank you,” and then tip-toe back. The TV cameras were too intimidating. (The event was broadcast to fifteen nations.) When I told Garry later, he burst into laughter (“I deserve it!” he exclaimed.)

Review my summation after the last diagram. <In an instant, my rooks know where to play. The knight on e2 is offered the d4-square, while my queen is unleashed on the g1-a7 diagonal. Stunned by the new-found promise my position offered, I spent several minutes readjusting my thoughts. I was going to win this game!>>

Oh no, Gazza was a pawn screwer? Say it isn't so.

I can't stand those guys (why is it always a guy?) who screw down their pieces after moving them.

Just because Seirawan did it doesn't mean it's an admirable thing to do.

To the best of my knowledge, Kasparov is the only player whose draws are included in the best game collections (not just "memorable" or "important" game collections) of many other GMs. Timman, Speelman, and others have all included their draws against Kaspy in their Best Games collections.

@The_Ghostess_Lola: Thank you for sharing this story. It is beautiful.

btw: where is your username coming from? Lola from the Kinks?

pfren

I thought that he was 'only' the World Champion. When I came to Basel, I met some kind of monster with one hundred eyes, which do not miss anything at all.

Tony Miles on Garry Kasparov

fburton

Whereas Magnus Carlsen is some kind of monster with two eyes?

I wonder how he will be (is being) remembered...!

pfren

It's different.

Kasparov scared his opponents to death right from the start of the game, and this lasted until they lost the game.

Against Carlsen, nobody is scared of him, and this lasts until they lose the game.

Lola was my given name from the Spanish soldiers who captured me near San Agustin (St. Augustine) back in the fall of 1565.

U don't get it, do you. I'd like to see if your nerves could hold up after a gazillion 'if-this-then-this' calculations against GK....Mr. Elubas.

My brain hurt during a rapid tournament in Lisbon some years ago when I faced 6  fide titled players in a row !  Rounds 4-9 had me against  IM, IM, IM,IM,GM,FM  !!  This was my " reward " for daring to win my first 3 games ! Surprised

The_Ghostess_Lola

How did you do ?

Raymaster2500

In Chess ALL games must end in a draw with perfect play, but how perfect is perfect ?????

The_Ghostess_Lola

Do we know that yet ?

Not proven, but that's the way to bet.
