Understanding the strange 1. Nf3

It seems like this move is innocuous. Yet White has played it and you don't know how to react against it. Is it an invitation to occupy the center with your pawns ? Should you accept it ?

The move 1. Nf3 can be surprising at first, but I will explain you how to play it with both colors, should you choose to play an ambitious line or a quiet one.

I would say it also depends a lot on how Black decides to play it:

- ambitious with 1... d5 2. c4 d4 for instance

- or very quiet with Nf6, g6, Bg7 ...

two really different types of games !

Nf6, g6, Bg7 can lead to main-line kingsinidans and 1...d5 2c4 e6  quite Queen's Gambit declined. As usual not much decided on first move
