Do you have a system that you use, a system of questions that you pose to yourself on each move? I have a system that I introduced to another player on chess.com and he said it was beneficial to him. For some, this might be of benefit to you. Whatever the case, let me know what you think ... better yet, share "your system" also.
I realize that some may think that sharing "my system" might give my opponents an advantage. Well, that's fine. I am just here to learn, and have fun ... not going for the world title ;-)
My system is characterized in a funny looking acronym.
FAST PAW PACT EPIDEMIC. At least thats how I remember it.
Fast - Literally count the force on the board. I add up the value of the pieces to be aware of material advantage/disadvantage.
fAst - Attack. Literally examine every attack possible on the board. This means direct piece x piece.
faSt - Space. I literally count the squares of control in the center. Not the classical center, but the boundaries c3, f3, f6, c6.
fasT - Time. I literally count the number of moves for each side that has been made to see who is "ahead" in time. The second aspect of time is what I call piece development count. I try to remain ahead in time and space after calculating an exchange or series of moves.
Paw - Pawn structure. I examine it and try to make weaknesses in opponents camp, and prevent them in mine.
pAW - Advantage/Weakness. I literally look at each square on the board and examine it to see if its weak/strong and to who's favor.
EPIDEMIC - Every Piece, Increase Deeper, Every Move, Increase Concentration. This just reminds me to look at every possible move that I can make, even if the first move that I look at seems great! It also reminds me to look at my opponents response to my candidate move. Lastly, it reminds me to look deeper into a combination of moves that I have calculated.
That's about it. It might seem silly to some, but its helped me enjoy the game more. I try to look at the advantages and disadvantages, then thats how I try to determine a plan ... or at least the side of the board to advance or protect on.
Although I try to go through this system on every move, it rarely happens 100% of a game. Especially in the excitement of an attack!
