Unpin to check mate?

I just played a game where my queen was pinned, but a queen move was available that would check mate. The game would not let me unpin. Does this make sense? The point of pinning is to protect the King, but if the game can be won, there is no need! Why are pins enforced if a checkmate is available?

Disregard, I understand this now.

The goal of chess to capture the opponent's king (which is shortened to just plain "checkmate").

Of course, unpinning in an attempt to checkmate the opponent's king results in your own king being captured first (since it's your opponent's turn to make a move).

This unpinning, therefore, counts as an illegal move in chess.
