Go to create challenge -- while you are selecting the time controls and other options to play a new game, there should be a "rated game" option you can disable.

Basically the same thing if he's using the desktop website.  At the top menu, go to play->live chess (or daily), then pick Create Challenge on the side menu on the right, there is a button for "rated game" that can be disabled.
