Updated Brilliant Moves

You could create a database of historically brilliant moves based not on unanimity, but consensus, then have an AI try to determine distinguishing characteristics and apply those. Seems like a lot of work though, and we can’t even get bots that play more or less like people.

I think if we all sat around and tried to define a brilliant move, it would be impossible to program it. When I think of brilliant, I think 1. Hard to find, 2. Counterintuitive in the sense that it’s not what people would normally play given their training, 3. Surprising, in that it makes you really take notice, and 4. Game-ending.

Anyone else have any ideas? But seriously, how do you program that?

It would also be impossible because there would a lot of different interpretations on what a brilliant move is, and sometimes those interpretations may even conflict. Just coming to a consensus on other move classifications isn't straight forward and has differences of opinion.

For me, the only possible complaint is that it is affected by the rating. Other than that, it is pretty subjective what is brilliant and what isn't, and it actually sounds that it is better defined than it used to be.

So I analyzed a game against the Andrea bot, and it gave me a "great" move. From the way it looks, it's pretty much what a "critical" move was in past evaluations; that is, an only-move (a move that was the only good move in the position). Seems reasonable.

I’m not even a good player yet, but i don’t care a bit about brilliant moves. What i really feel good about is when i can play a game with one less blunder than the previous game. I think you’ve all made good points, but get me off the Blunder Bus and I’ll be excited about that. I don’t need my ego stroked or atta boys from a program.

You approach the game the right way.

The "Great Move" idea needs some work. I'm getting a lot of these. I had three in the last game I played, including once for the only legal move in the position.

Yes but it can’t be the only legal move because then that would be forced.
