For winning the US championship each year, say last year or this year or next year, how much is awarded to the men's champion?  Anyone know?

Thanks for the answer in advance.

I think somewhere between the $10,000 range.

40 000$ was the 1st prize fund for the men in 2012.

So...not much Smile

Thanks. Wow, that's ISN'T much.  And many of these overrated NBA ball players get millions here in the US.

I read the WORLD champion chess player got around $300,000.

The prize fund for the World Championship was $2.55m

Master_Po

Well, that's more like it! That all goes to the one person?

Scottrf

No, Anand got $1.4m.

I think its somewhere from $3,000 to $5,000 for the US Champ.  I think the prize fund is about $25,000, maybe even $40,000 like someone else said, but that has to pay prize money to all the winners and placers and runners up etc, plus some of it usually winds up getting kicked back to the logistical guys that organized the whole thing.

So anywhere from about $5000 to $10,000 for the US champ.  That's pitiful.  Goes to show how much the prize money is driven by TV and sponsers for commercials.  (good for Anand, the $1.4m)

VLaurenT

That was 40k$ for 1st place in 2012 Smile

The overall prize fund was 160k$ (still not much...)

It's sad how much the US Chess Champ makes. It's even worse when it was Nakamura, who probably does make ~$500,000 a year playing chess worldwide. Meanwhile, the ones who probably need it more only wind up getting ~$2k for missing a whole week or two of their lives. But everyone that plays in either the men's or women's championship does get some sort of prize money.
