Walking the king

Hello everyone I was wondering if anyone has any tips or ways I could learn how to walk the king in the center for mate. I've seen many games where players not all GM's can walk the king by sacrificing material and mate. Is it something I could practice ? Or is it a rare occurrence ? Please inform me on this technique more thoroughly if possible thank you too all.
