Want to Get Better

I have just recently started playing chess again after many long years.  I was never that good at chess but I love the game.  My question to all of you is this.  What are some ways that I can get better at this game?

I'm in exactly the same situation as you. I'm 59 and didn't play chess for over 20 years.

The best way to improve, and it's not easy, is first to study, every day if possible. Find an opening that you like and get hold of a good book about that specific opening and study it until you grasp the ideas, you may have to go over it two or three times. It's important to use a board and pieces and to look carefully at complicated positions, don't just watch a video and think you've learned something. We learn best by doing things physically (i.e. moving pieces) and by repetition. Try writing down your own analysis before reading what the book says about a position.

Use the tactics trainer and, most importantly, play lots of games against good players. Computers never make mistakes and it can be very discouraging to play against them. Analyse your games, both your losses and, most importantly, your wins but from you opponent's point of view. Try to follow his thought and see where he began to go wrong.

Play in live tournaments if at all possible. It's amazing the difference that makes to your game because, when confronted with an actual board and pieces and a real, live human being the brain goes into overdrive. And besides it's good fun.

But most of all have fun and don't take it too seriously. After all you'll probably never become world champion. But if you do  and this helps then please remember that all contributions are gratefully accepted, especially by me!
