THINK MATE

Mygame5377

Think Mate is that it?

gabrielconroy

Was that "think, mate"?

likesforests

Think: "Improve my pieces."

vagamundo

it's obvious RWBal just wanted to call attention to his forum so he posted the first thing that came to his mind. As far as a chess advise, he doesn't have a clue of what to say!!!

Now Haus, he DOES know about chess & advice!

There is a way to improve instantly: Don't move until you are sure nothing is hanging. Better yet, don't move until you're sure 2 moves down the road nothing is hanging.

RWBal

A persons response speaks volumes about them.  Vagamundo is a perfect example.

I think at times we all tend to read to deap in to things.  I think it happens too often.  You were correct with your interpretation.  I think it is important to always keep in mind the ultimate goal which is mate.  We need to focus on many things during a game - opening, developement, opposition, etc.  Too much focus on any one item, specifically developement, can at times cause us to overlook mate threats and winning exchanges.

My father, many years ago, learned to play chess during his lunch hour when he worked in the Pgh mills.  His studies paid off and he eventually become a quality chess player, winning a few tournaments.  One game in particular he was playing the PA state champion.  He was up a piece in mid game.  He continued developement and walked in to a surpise mate.  The state champ told him after the game to always "think mate".

I apologize if my initial comment was too vague causing misinterpretations and as a result, upset readers.

If you want to improve, you will come up with more effective ideas and formulate them quicker.  As for me in scholastic tournaments, I rarely am behind, but because I take so much time, I get in severe time trouble and have to bail myself out of it.  Many times I have a winning positon, but have 20 seconds left, so I make a game losing blunder.  So make sure you can play fast, but still formulate decent ideas.

Step 1. Avoid Losing

Step 2. (If 1, then) Avoid Drawing

Step 3. (If game=end) Congratulations! You have won!

Idiot's Guide to Chess is working wondres for me, written by a former U.S. champion.

I never understood the marketing idea behind the title of the "Idiot's Guide" series, but it gets pretty complicated, and it's very user-friendly.
