There are conflicting stories on the match. Not sure anyone really exactly knows the rules of the match. Taking nothing away from Lasker, but he did seem to cherry pick his opponents.

Seriously. He drew 1-1-8 against Lasker in 1910. And there was no tie break - Lasker kept the title because tied.
Is Schlechter worthy to be called World Chess Champion?
Also: Lasker was unchallenged World Chess Champion 1897 to 1907, as well as 1910 to 1921.
