Count the tournaments won. None cares about ELO peak etc... I know that Karpov has won 120 tournaments two times as much as the second Kasparov. How many tournaments has Fischer won?? It may turn out that he is actually the weakiest World Champ..! Someone mentioned Smyslov. Smyslov maybe one of the best champions. He played for the title in his 60..

Remember when Karpov beat Kasparov for the title? Oh wait...

All he to do was draw and he lost.

My bad.

This is classical world champions right? Not to be confused with Senior World Champions, Junior world champions and Correspondance World champions, blitz world champions and rapid world champions.

Fisher, he didn't even draw a single game against Karpov in their 1975 match.

Maybe Morphy, since he didn't even understand why pawns are important. Just develop your pieces, sacrifice to gain a lead in development, pray to God that there is a mate.

Emanuel Lasker because when he lost the title to Capablanca Lasker gave up the match before its full games came to an end.

Yes, you are right, mentioning those simple facts, but please mention as well in full the circumstances at that time and the reasons he stopped playing that match, otherwise you do him injustice.

I think you have a very valid point. When people read what you said, they will immediately assume you're saying Fischer is a weak player in general, which is not what you're saying (right, lol)? However, his spanking of Spassky was impressive...

Hmm.

I can't understand how Spassky can be called the weakest champ just because he lost to Fischer...  According to Fischer himself, he was his toughest opponent and actually beat him a lot before their match (without losing a game!), and continued to be a tough opponent after the match.

Personally, I think Spassky is the most underrated champion since he got his revenge on Petrosian in 1969 after losing to him in 1966.  Plus, he has a handful of brilliant games that are dismissed when compared to Fischer's, when they are just as beautiful to play out, or even more complicated to think over.

For the weakest champion, I would probably say Karpov since he fell victim to a few immortal games by other grandmasters and champs, including Korchnoi, Miles, and Taimanov, and didn't have an aggressive style like Spassky or Tal.  JMO.  :|
