Wesley So resigned after 6 moves

There were numerous examples of the men writiting moves in time trouble including Ray Robinson who was down to one second in one of his games. Anyway the whole thing seems like some psychological blunder.

I never really got the rule. How exactly is writing numbers not deemable as "distracting" and letters somehow is? I mean someone could easily make up some inspirational acronyms or something and write fewer characters so frequency of writing isn't even a good argument.

At any rate it looks like So needs to figure out how to get his head back in the game. This is a pretty normal thing in boxing I think.

At high level tournament, I think writing your moves can now be obsoleted. Computers can now displays and count the moves. Road run marathons for example have now electronic time/distance monitor for each runnners.

Machines can "lie" http://www.addictinginfo.org/2011/09/28/election-fraud-and-diebold-voting-machines/

Every player should have the right to record their moves.  If they are going to write anything else it should be available for everyone to see.  Go to a second area away from the tables and do whatever graffiti you want in a walk hallway where spectators and other players can see.

fabelhaft

"According to Key, So’s mother and aunt came to St. Louis and contacted So minutes after his arrival at a hotel. Key said they began, in strident encounters over the course of several days, to insist that he return to college or face losing complete contact with his family, including his sisters. At one point, So’s mother and aunt confronted him outside the chess club after his game, trying to grab his arm and yelling at him when he wouldn’t go with them to talk, according to Key and So. That led to an apology by So to the club for the scene, and a request that the mother and aunt be banned from the tournament site.

So’s mother, Eleanor So, could not be reached for comment.

Key said So’s mother admitted to her that So’s former chess coach at Webster had a hand in her trip to St. Louis to confront her son, including reserving a hotel room for her.

Key and So said the former coach, Paul Truong, was angry over losing one of the world’s top players from his team when So left Webster. “Wesley fell apart after that, knowing that his own biological family was working with his worst enemy,” Key said. “Paul will never forgive Wesley for leaving Webster.”

Key said that “three adults conspired to destroy a kid.”"

Wow...

ProfessorProfesesen

Bloody hell...I hope he comes out of all this in one piece, and not go off the rails like Fisher. Wish him all the best.

Key has to calm down a little bit.

This is what you get when you try to stack the deck.  Everyone is getting what they deserve.  So, a sellout and disgrace to his family, Truong who can't use So as his pawn anymore, and So's parents who apparently allowed this all to happen from the get go.

Let's focus on homegrown American players from now on.  Foreigners coming in and stealing the title is not the way America should win championships.

piotrchess

he dosen't resign he was forietated  of illigal ntes and for talking

caronte1

this is what you get for playing in the USA , this have never had happen anywhere else in the world , its simple the USA has been going down in world ratings and will keep doing so for thinghs like this

tigerprowl9

I got the solution for So!!!

Instead of writing, wear tattoos!!!

TitanCG

No wonder he's so distracted. No one should have to deal with this but unfortunately a lot of people do. Hopefully he can work it out with his folks.

So just wants to follow his dreams man, He had to do what he can because his circumstances are very bad.

If i were him i would have been too scared to do stuff like federation switch, quit college, and many more hard things.

I salute him for his bravery in pursuing his dream of being a professional chess player.

I wish people won't look at him as a bad person, traitor etc. but not everyone has the same views on everything :(

Why can't you represent Philippines and be a professional chess player?  If we got rid of players based on country and had leagues instead, then I could understand.  Susan Polgar could have the Polgar league or whatever, Kasparov could have his, and then they would compete against each other.

Currently, that's not the way it is.  He got the talent from Webster and then said, "See ya" when he changed the country who he represented.  That is not only immoral and unethical but really shows disrespect towards the people that have helped him to get to where he is today.  He is clearly only thinking about himself and no one else.  Did Magnus have to come to Webster and join America?

Immoral? Good grief man he's 21 years old of course he doesn't know what he wants to do! And why are you acting like he owes them? He is a student that changed his mind on his career path. It happens every single day. I think you're blowing this way out of proportion. I don't even want to know what you think about foreign exchange students.

Agreed.  Next time So plays Akobian he should stare him down the whole game and see if he can take the heat.  Not against any rules and chess being partly a psychological game isn't meant to be for weak ass players who try to win on cheap forfeits.  Akobian obviously wasn't up for playing as he wanted the easy get out.

If people here find it too frightening to have players playing across from each other you can always have them in separate rooms I suppose just keying in their moves to an empty board in the playing area.  Though to me sport is meant to be about players facing off against each other in person, chess needs to modernise and not retreat back into the shallow technicalities of some snobby nerd politics.

tigerprowl9

"He is a student that changed his mind on his career path."

You actually believe that?  He came to USA, studied with Susan Polgar, and changed countries he represented because he actually wanted to be a dentist?

He came to USA for the sole purpose to get the training he needed to become a top chess player.  This was not a plan B or "let's see if I like chess" type of venture.  College students travel, they don't pick a country and get a champion to train them if they are going to change career paths.

"I don't even want to know what you think about foreign exchange students."

This has nothing to do with foreign exchange students.  I have been one and might again.  I am from America have lived in England, Japan, Korea, and China.  I didn't hire the most elite trainers in a field and I don't know of anyone else that would if they were not serious about that field.

So, save your malarkey argument and excuses for So.  No one with common sense is going to buy it.

What people? the Chess Federation of the Philippines?

If its the people from NCFP ( National Chess Federation of the Philippines) then ill show you why he left

If it isn't just ignore what i say and please clarify the "people" you are referring to so we could have a reasonable argument/chat that would enlighten the people that are reading our chat.

http://en.chessbase.com/post/wesley-so-shooting-for-the-stars-2-2

To summarize it, he DID not get formal recogntion for his gold medal in the Universiade, in Kazan, Russia. It was very prestigious yet he got nothing from it.

It took him 1.5 years to get recogniton from it.

www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/senate-files-resolution-lauding-chess-grandmaster-wesley-so

Only after all the trouble about federation switching is over. He won't get any financial incentives now since he isn't representing the NCFP / Philippines anymore.

The Head of the NCFP is a corrupt person and the support here to elite athletes is garbage. Sure, We have a guy named Pacquiao but he got where he is mostly because of U.S support /foreign support.

I may be from PH but even i think our federation is corrupt. He is where he is right now because of his talent and hard work, not because of the support of our federation.

I don't think you will change your view and I'm not trying to. I just want to show you and everyone else why his actions can be reasonable.

Lets agree to disagree i guess.

Hardly... The guy played the Tarrasch for crying out loud. He was just following the rules. It wouldn't look to good if his opponent was defying the arbiter and he just didn't say anything.

tigerprowl9

"What people? the Chess Federation of the Philippines?"

Did the Philippines pay for his college expenses or did his parents?  How did he get to go to USA and train and study at Webster to begin with?

You want to talk about corruption Polgar and her hench husband are no better.  As a player I respect Polgar, but the games she plays is just as bad leaving Texas.  She even left Hungary.  The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree, eh?

I would support this a whole lot more if we got rid of country distinctions.  If you are going down the path of discrediting a country, then that is ammunition to rid team events based on country and allow people to form leagues.

The point is he had support of family, friends, coaches, teammates, students, etc...

Then when he got his break, he left the "band" to go solo.  If that is the kind of guy he is and you appreciate it, then that's your prerogative.  That's not the way my morals rest.
